School of Global and Community Studies

The School of Global and Community Studies (GCS) produces individuals who can undertake new kinds of regional revitalization and contribute to the advancement of a global society by searching for ways to resolve the various issues facing local, national, and global communities.

Students will choose one of two approaches at the beginning of their sophomore year: One is the Global Approach, which enables students to acquire the cross-cultural, communication and critical thinking skills necessary for developing a global perspective, and requires students to study abroad for one or two semesters. The other is the Community Approach, which enables students to develop the understanding and practical skills necessary to contribute to regional revitalization and recommends students to undertake study abroad for one semester.

By engaging students in practical activities that contribute to local and global communities, the GCS aims to provide them with opportunities to develop extensive knowledge and to foster a learning attitude which will lead to new understandings and the ability to resolve some of the most pressing problems of the day.
